Knysna, South Africa – to see if it’s possible to see the elephants from space

Eleanor’s grandmother lives in Knysna, but she has never visited. In her entry, she wrote, “We wonder if you can see the Knysna elephants in the forest.”

We thought this was an interesting question, and found have found her a photograph of the area taken from the ISS in June 2005 by either Sergei Krikalev or John Phillips. While this picture doesn’t show any elephants, the powerful imagers on satellites owned by a company called DigitalGlobe have spotted them (and whales) and the technology is being used to help work out where to station park rangers to prevent poaching in national parks in other parts of Africa.
